It is only in the last decade that physicians and colleagues working in the area of intimate partner violence (IPV) prevention have begun to realize that surviving manual strangulation victims are much more common than previously realized. This awareness was brought about by the groundbreaking work of San Diego Asst. City Attorney Gael Strack, JD and Emergency Physician George McClane, MD.

Their multi-media presentation, "We Used to Call it Choking," covers their findings from a study of 300 misdemeanor attempted strangulation cases, including: the medical aspects of strangulation in surviving and non-surviving victims; legal aspects of investigating and prosecuting attempted strangulation cases; practical tips for all professionals handling strangulation cases; how to develop and use experts in court; working with survivors; and developing an implementation plan in a local community or agency. Their presentations are customized to meet the needs of a particular audience. They can provide basic or advanced strangulation training with agendas varying from 1 hour up to 2 days for their advanced strangulation course. The advanced strangulation training usually includes a police officer and a doctor to ensure every aspect of a strangulation case is covered by the professionals. Sample agendas, course objectives and handouts can be provided upon request. Please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
