Verizon, Bexar County To Fight Teen Dating Violence
October 27, 2011 By Simon Gutierrez SAN ANTONIO -- Verizon Wireless and the Bexar County Family Justice Center announced a joint campaign to fight teen dating violence Wednesday. The campaign, called "Relate Right S.A.," is an education and outreach program designed to educate teens about living in healthy relationships. According to the Centers for Disease Control, one out of 11 teens reports being a victim of physical violence in their dating relationship each year. Emotional and verbal abuse often accompanies the physical violence, experts said. "Typically the perpetrator will kind of isolate the victim," said Kimberly Burke, Northside ISD coordinator of guidance and counseling. "Controlling and checking their cell phones, checking their whereabouts, checking in on facebook." The Relate Right S.A. program is not yet affiliated with school districts, but will eventually partner with them, beginning with presentations to students, faculty, and parents, and eventually becoming part of the curriculum. |
