Statewide Stand Against Domestic Violence
August 31, 20011 Written by Chris Rose BRUNSWICK, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- At churches and community buildings throughout the state bells rang out in a unified stand against domestic violence. It has been a particularly violent summer in Maine. Three women, two children and a man were victims of domestic violence. Organizers say they want to make it clear that Maine will not tolerate a climate of family violence. From Portland -- to Brunswick -- to Bangor and beyond, bells rang out around the state. All at the same time at noon. The bells rang out for two minutes. The first minute in remembrance of victims of domestic violence. The second minute as a call to all of us to search for ways to end the violence. Victim's advocates appear frustrated by the continuing cases. They say its time to take a stand, much like Mothers Against Drunk Driving did with the problem of impaired drivers. "Has drunk driving disappeared? No, but it has diminished and penalties have become more severe", said Lois Reckitt of the Family Crisis Center. Before people left the event in Brunswick, they were urged to visit a table set up with brochures and take information with them. Advocates say they may not need the help offered, but more than likely someone they know will. |
