Stanislaus County Nonprofit Notches Important Grant Money
December 28, 2011

MODESTO -- A nonprofit that gives hope and help to abuse victims got a nice holiday gift Wednesday with news of a substantial state grant, Stanislaus County District Attorney Birgit Fladager said.

The Stanislaus Family Justice Center will add a detective and a victim's advocate with the money, which could come to $626,400 over three years.

Sheriff Adam Christianson said state authorities were impressed that the downtown Modesto facility is a successful collaboration between his office, Fladager's, the Modesto Police Department and the Haven Women's Center. It's a competitive grant, meaning the Family Justice Center was up against other applicants around California.

"We're thrilled," the sheriff said. "Any revenue opportunities in the middle of a revenue crisis is a good thing."

Abuse victims seek counseling and medical help, apply for restraining orders and talk with investigators, all under one roof in downtown Modesto. The I street facility also has a family room with toys and a television, a place for meals and changing diapers, and meeting rooms.

The one-stop concept is catching on in other communities across the United States and came here a year ago after four years of effort.
